Gray Feathered Bird (A Birthday Poem for Wole Soyinka)

A bird flew across this land
Seventy-eight odd years ago and
The land was chaotic but now was silent
Which smiled and whispered 'a great' had been born
And none but all will be lifted by this special one
The heavens had let him go with a pen
Tucked beneath his wings to fly far, far away
And make a stop in a nation in need of a hero
And genius who had the heart of a child
And the tenacity of a warrior
To fight for the freedom of his comrades
And sing so loud and beautifully
Against the oppression of the weak
The skies were blue this very day
As God and his angels stood and cheered
The grey- feathered laureate
A bird flew into this land of ours
And in a dark sky, set a rainbow
That all who fly in after him
Will add their colours
And live the world a far better place than they met.
