New Year Sonnets 1998

N ew Year's sonnets seek to ascertain
I ntrinsic patterns, seeds before they're sown, -
N ew trends chance sends before end aims are shown.
E xtrapolations from the past attain
T rue insight reading right the future's chain.
E ffect and Cause pause never to postpone
E xacting cascade challenges that aren’t alone,
N or shall there space remain for drone where brain
N eeds entertains through growing greed for gain.
I nternet applied to telephone
N ets exchange change echoes round to clone
E xperiments to end reaction's reign.
T ransition’s challenge key could bind or free,
Y outh age’s chaperon henceforth shall be.

N ineteen Ninety eight may well remain
I n many minds two thousand's stepping stone
N ot able in itself to stand alone
E xcept as extra carriage on Time's train.
T o fill the space allotted and unchain
E nergy whose influence, unknown,
E xpands, cements the future's cornerstone,
N eeds strength, and sense, - without which strength is vain.
N ew momentum surely shall sustain
I nventions which, old orders overthrown,
N ow interact as chips of silicon
E xpose much which Pandora's box contains.
T hus progress' spiral faster spins as we
Y ear EIGHT and ninety greet, great changes see.
