The Algernon-Gordon Effect (5-7-5 Poem)
Man considered dumb,
Retardation sufferer.
Lost inside the world.
Now science evolves;
Operation makes him smart,
Genius he soon becomes.
Befriends Algernon,
Lab mouse that got changed before him,
Two geniuses.
Scientists use them.
They run away together;
Scared but not alone
Algernon changes,
Charlie brings him back to lab,
Right back to the start.
Algernon goes dumb,
Charlie loses his smarts too.
Right back to the start.
Goodbye Algernon,
Hope I can remember you,
Back at the centre.
He left to go to,
The retardation centre,
Far away from home.
Algernon dies first,
He remembers their friendship,
He does say goodbye.
Smart mouse; his best friend.
Cries as on his grave places,
Algernon's Flowers.
•Poem based and dedicated to book ‘Flowers for Algernon' by Daniel Keyes and to his characters in it, Charlie Gordon and Algernon.
