Long Rest
Everyday I unintentionally play
the hypocrite and the ass;
I'm often ashamed of immense insensitivity;
would never desire too soon
to become acquainted with divine judgment;
do not envision myself as first rung friendship material
nor the best candidate for loyal boyfriend or husband;
never been the best person at keeping the secrets
of a tortured heart;
not currently terribly handsome nor historically adorable;
never hugely successful at making money
nor gifted at keeping my hands on it;
not one to be introduced to the president of the united states
nor the local civic community club;
not one to be remembered after leaving the room.
But I celebrate nonetheless who I am
and the potential to one day please myself
before my long rest at heaven's gate.
