Free Poems and Depression

I had no idea how I was led to
the table of this wonderful site
while hungrily ransacking the web
for some juicy morsels of free poems —

what brightened my eyesight on the manu
was not its featured Categories
of Nobel Prize Winners,
of Prominent Poets of all nations
of thematic poems of all sorts
of leading women poets of all kinds
of Top Poets of all times
of Famous Poems of the month,
nor was its rich links
to prominent poetry journals,
to foundations and associations
to competitions and cash prizes —

for while congratulating myself
on an endless lavishing feast I had found
to my starved eyes, I also saw
both above and under
its powerful search machine
are in large fond and large fond size —

I first dismissed them as entrées of a silly sponsor
yet soon my glittering eyes gloomed
as my click on the manu
had each and every exciting poem
respectively by those contemporary
British and American poets laureate
whom I had been long since drooling for
sent up side dished by Depression,
Depression, and Depression
persistently pre-dominating every new page
my appetite was spoilt
as I felt my stomach churning
my throat retching at the unsavoury courses
uncalled for
these nauseating links ruining
the most nourishing dishes of human mind

then I quickly reflected
upon my scanty knowledge
of English poetry, which does mixed
ingredients comprise, suggesting
to savour the sweetness of life
one has to prepare to taste its burnt steak,
to chew on its cold meatless boiled bone
to stomach its fiery peppery sauce
to swallow its arsenic rat poison.

otherwise, one would be prepared
to turn into a hermit
or face an early death
be it self-induced or by accident,
the archetypal predecessors
Keats, Shelly, Poe, and Plath
could have had help from Depression
could have found useful

to my horror, I also recalled
biographical information of
great poets, many of whom appear
to have enjoyed a short life span
with a poor mean age of
three scores and two
Shakespeare, Wordsworth
Blake, Hardy and Yeats,
are among the unenviable
could have had help from Depression
would have found useful

a very original chef’s special it is
to compliment the tantalizing flavour of
a multiple course of poets
after all there is no such a thing
as a free meal
when I sit myself down on a hard-to-find
real free feast
to gormandise
along with many other hungry gormandisers
I will be lucky enough to be served
a Dish of Depression.

with that in mind
and the retching having subsided
I licked my lips, clicked on the links
and found myself in need of a visa card.
