Ouch! ! !
In the dark nothing's the same.
The familiar becomes unknown.
No flicker of light is what we blame.
We stub our toe and moan.
We hold our hands instinctively out
and reach for darkened space.
We move tentatively inch by inch
and feel for a remembered place.
Where is the candle? Where is the match?
Even a flashlight will do.
Ouch! ! I stubbed another toe.
I'm gonna be black and blue.
Aha! the wall, now this we know.
Soon we shall find the switch.
We'll flick it on and there'll be light
and the darkened night of pitch
will be flooded with light and we shall see
how much damage we've done.
Overjoyed, the familiar returns
and the dark threatens no-one.
