Ancient Bonds
May the daylight bring you hope
After a night of tears,
May a friend detain you for an hour of joy
After a season of sorrow.
Your eyes are more splendorous
Than the dancing garden flowers of your youth;
I can never see you without an obligation
Of compliments for cherished memories.
We never graced a church altar with vows,
You saved those words for another;
Any anger on my part has dissipated
Though some hurt and regrets remain.
We were once reckless children of passion
Laughing in the amusement park breeze
And swaying like trees to midnight music
That offered freedom and desire.
I don't expect you to frequent this city again
Or walk with me alone at night along the river
Counting the stars that infiltrate the sky
With mystical love and the hope or reuniting ancient bonds.
