Supplication

Darkness descends
And the destination lying far behind
God! This supplication I do make
Give me Light, clear brilliant light!
Not to enjoy the wayside scenes
But that I shall not stumble and fall

I ask Thee,
The wisdom to discern the Truth
For here, Truth is ever beguiled
Luscious smiles and sugary talks
Wrap the plots of devious schemes

I ask Thee,
The prudence to escape the snares
Laid by wolves in lambs' clothing
Behind the profuse praises of men
Lie the sneering taunts that wound
Beneath the velvety paws remain
The sharp piercing claws that cut.

I ask Thee
The courage to dissent
When forced to act out against my will.
The glitter of gold or the sceptre of power
Let them not dissuade me from my resolve.

I ask Thee,
The power to resist
Justice denied, rights violated
The weak exploited, the poor smothered
The innocent accused and the guilty acquitted.

I await
The peace to dawn upon
In a world where violence rules
Where hate like worms eat into the core
And the air rent with fears - illusory and real

I await
The light to break into me
To see myself bare and naked!
My cavernous interiors hide designs - malign.
How I put on appearances to suit my face!

Give me Light! Oh Lord!
Clear brilliant Light,
Not to enjoy the wayside scenes
But that I shall not stumble and fall.
