Isaac Watts

Psalm 65 part 3

The blessings of the spring; or, God gives rain.
A Psalm for the husbandman.

Good is the Lord, the heav'nly King,
Who makes the earth his care;
Visits the pastures ev'ry spring,
And bids the grass appear.

The clouds, like rivers raised on high,
Pour out at thy command
Their wat'ry blessings from the sky,
To cheer the thirsty land.

The softened ridges of the field
Permit the corn to spring;
The valleys rich provision yield,
And the poor lab'rers sing.

The little hills, on every side,
Rejoice at falling showers;

Eva

Dry the tears for holy Eva,
With the blessed angels leave her;
Of the form so soft and fair
Give to earth the tender care.

For the golden locks of Eva
Let the sunny south-land give her
Flowery pillow of repose,
Orange-bloom and budding rose.

In the better home of Eva
Let the shining ones receive her,
With the welcome-voiced psalm,
Harp of gold and waving palm,

All is light and peace with Eva;
There the darkness cometh never;
Tears are wiped, and fetters fall.
And the Lord is all in all.

Freedom's Prayer

Perhaps, my friend, you shall see me no more-
If this be so, do not bury me, I do implore!
Should I not see you again, keep in your heart
A place for me and for all that I did, in you, impart!

Continue to hold true to all that makes thee beauteous-
To the same, I shall remain, steadfast and duteous!
Do not feel sorrow for me though, live your lives whole;
If gone, it will only be in body, they shan't steal too, my soul!

Keep my children too, fresh in your thoughts, they will need
For you to assure them of what you know is my heart's creed!
Should I not return, the fracture of my heart will be complete;
Alas, sadly, this would signify fully, truth's dreadful defeat!

So too, if this comes to pass, though my heart continues breaking-
'I have set the Lord continually before me...I will not be shaken.' (Psalm 16: 8)

A Lost Chord

SEATED one day at the Organ,
I was weary and ill at ease,
And my fingers wandered idly
Over the noisy keys.

I do not know what I was playing,
Or what I was dreaming then ;
But I struck one chord of music,
Like the sound of a great Amen.

It flooded the crimson twilight,
Like the close of an Angel's Psalm,
And it lay on my fevered spirit
With a touch of infinite calm.

It quieted pain and sorrow,
Like love overcoming strife ;
It seemed the harmonious echo
From our discordant life.

Thy Name

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
I will declare thy name unto my brethren.… Psalm 102

OK. Let’s not call what ditched us God:
ghu, the root in Sanskrit, means not God,
but only the calling thereupon. Let’s call God
Fun. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was Fun. Fun created man in his own image.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no Fun.
Let’s call the House of God the Funhouse. Fun
derives, according to Dr. Onions (may he
with his Johnson rest in peace), from fond,
or foolish. God, in this prime sense, is fond
of us, and we, if all goes well, of him. Let’s
call God luck. There is no luck in scripture.
Chance gets mentioned several times, my favorite
being, Time and chance happeneth to them all;
but luck is the unspoken name. King David
to the harp and sackbut sings, in paraphrase, My luck?
Gimme a fucking break! With my luck, how do I know?

The Power of Prayer

Battles are fought on bended knees,
I believe in the power of Prayer.
By standing on His Promises
I see the proof of His great Power.

My land I lifted to God each day
Its people in His Mercy, bless
Earthquakes come, grounds may sway
But Prayer holds us in His Goodness.

Seven point five in magnitude!
And He spared us such a calamity,
I praise dear God in gratitude
With all my heart, thank Him deeply.

I pray He bless my beloved country
Make it a beacon of His Truth and Light,
May He raise it up in prosperity
For we call upon Him, the God of might.

The Lord Saved Me From Death

'The Lord saved me from death; He stopped my tears and kept me from defeat.
And so I walk in the presence of the Lord in the world of the living' Psalm 116
Now I ask that You allow my riddance of this deceit-
Humble as I may be, upon this day of much Thanksgiving!

'I heed Your message Heavenly Father', as I have said;
'My departure from this, the only home I have ever known, all but done;
Your purposeful journey for me incomplete, otherwise I'd still be dead;
I prepare myself now to leave behind all I've ever known, all but One!

My present circumstance but an interlude, of sorts-
I shan't be waylaid here more than planned;
I shall endeavor dutifully to deliver what my heart exhorts-
Done in spite of abject fear of this unknown, as You command!
Deliver me to my sanctuary, from this woeful place-
What shall become of me then, is entirely up to Your Grace! '

Empty Cans, Noisy Gongs

How come it is their unwritten rule
That seems to dictate and dominate,
Generalizing us as basal fools
In this a venue for Freedom's fate?

Perhaps the Power of these words
Cut close to where the heart wounds were,
Hidden slyly with meticulous cords
Childhood pain buried deeply there.

Bitter tendrils of forgotten Anger
Wrapped so to keep the Mind enclosed
And morbid Darkness becomes its Ruler
To sit enthroned, with Pride - repose.

When touched by Truth it shrieks repulsion
Poetic tantrums as words fly about
Armed with blind aggressive Retaliation
It stoops to the level of Ridicule's shouts.

The Tear Bottle

Could an such inadequate, ignoble vessel
Contain the wondrous depth and august meaning,
Of all her brokenness in sorrow tell
And capture thus her grief so overwhelming?

Shall this bottle keep all endearing thoughts,
Carve there a masterpiece of his life inside,
Retain the days their blissful lives had wrought,
Enclose a ribboned love that their hearts had tied?

Tears to record all her devotion told,
Yet cannot keep her heart for him completely.
Such weight of treasured memories to hold,
And great a task to carry faithfully!

Duddingstone

WITH caws and chirrupings, the woods
In this thin sun rejoice.
The Psalm seems but the little kirk
That sings with its own voice.

The cloud-rifts share their amber light
With the surface of the mere -
I think the very stones are glad
To feel each other near.

Once more my whole heart leaps and swells
And gushes o'er with glee;
The fingers of the sun and shade
Touch music stops in me.

Now fancy paints that bygone day
When you were here, my fair -
The whole lake rang with rapid skates
In the windless winter air.
