The Love Sonnets Of Proteus. Part IV: Vita Nova: XCIII

A DISAPPOINTMENT
Spring, of a sudden, came to life one day.
Ere this, the Winter had been cold and chill.
That morning first the Summer air did fill
The world, making bleak March seem almost May.
The daffodils were blooming golden gay;
The birch trees budded purple on the hill;
The rose, that clambered up the window--sill,
Put forth a crimson shoot. All yesterday
The winds about the casement chilly blew,
But now the breeze that played before the door
So caught the dead leaves that I thought there flew
Brown butterflies up from the grassy floor.
--But someone said you came not. Ah, too true!
And I, I thought that Winter reigned once more.

Watching Mother Die

Class is almost over
And the bell's about to ring
As she slips away to darkness
Praying 'What's next? Anything? '
And she asks for God's forgiveness
Drawing in her last frail breath
Sill at least the pain is over
Though He might not plumb exist
And I wonder if she's lonely
And I wonder if she's scared
To let go of all the ego
Eighty years that she has carried
But I'm too afraid to ask her
Her last thoughts before she goes
Does she think she'll be transported?
No one's been there, no one knows
Then I cry to think who I'll become
When her soul finally leaves
And I hate myself for wondering that
It isn't about me

To a Light Houskeeper

(Who hitches laundering articles to the curtain
string and pastes them on the pane.)

Lady, thou that livest
Just across the way,
If a hang thou givest
What the people say,
If a cuss thou carest
What a poet thinks-
Hearken, if thou darest,
Most immodest minx!

Though thy gloves thou tiest,
To the curtain string,
Though the things thou driest
Gird me while I sing,
Hankies and inventions
Of the lacy tribe-
Things I may not mention,

June Picture

June Picture

In the enchanted dell, where grass is forever green,
I saw a carpet of summer birds, yellow as real butter
before it was made low fat to suit a slimming fad.
They took off, dispersed flew slowly on silent wings;
amongst thorny bushes that are seven hued green,
waiting for a lumbering troll to pass.

Last time I saw a yellow summer bird, it was sallow,
late September it had lived too long, sat on the sill
rain fell and it as soaked; opened the window to let
it in, could sit by the fire till spring. Too late, in my
hand it turned into fluff, blew dust off my hand and
I saw each particle disperse and fly on silent wings.

Butterfly (summer bird.)

Love Hurts

Love hurts,
It hurts to the core
When hands loosen the intimate clasp
And they turn poles apart
One rushing to the North
And the other, South.

Love hurts,
It hurts to the core
When the bunch of withered roses
And thorns, leaves and stems
Gather dust on the window sill
Of a dishevelled house.

Love hurts,
It hurts to the core
When they don't look eye to eye,
And Love is no more blind,
For a raging storm from nowhere takes over
The effeminate steam of

Sanctuary

HIGH above hate I dwell:
O storms! farewell.
Though at my sill your daggered thunders play,
Lawless and loud to-morrow as to-day,
To me they sound more small
Than a young fay’s footfall:
Soft and far-sunken, forty fathoms low
In Long Ago,
And winnowed into silence on that wind
Which takes wars like a dust, and leaves but love behind.

Higher Felicity
Doth climb to me,
And bank me in with turf and marjoram
Such as bees lip, or the new-weanëd lamb;
With golden barberry-wreath,
And bluets thick beneath;
One grosbeak, too, mid apple-buds a guest
With bud-red breast,
Is singing, singing! All the hells that rage

A Sunrise

A chill was emanating all around,
It was just the sunrise in the morn',
I got up and know what I found?
The leaves and grass just new born.

I peered through the window sill,
The sky was blue and golden cake,
the world was in the bed still,
while I was wide awake.

The cuckoo started a lovely ballad,
which was a lovely song,
I listened to it in a fad,
and got lost in, for so long.

The nature was fresh and lively then,
I was tempted to be with it,
but the alarm bought me back to my ken,
to a clumsy world around me knit.

Because You Were Beautiful

Because you were beautiful
The frost formed fingerprints, on window glass
As if to touch your shoulder, when you pass;
Or write in code, your name upon the leaves
So that it shows, whenever something breathes,
Because you were beautiful

Because you were beautiful
The storm left grayish teardrops on the sill,
A keepsake of the stillness it must feel
After angry clouds have left the sky,
And the birds and wildlife breathe a sigh:
Because you were beautiful

Because you were beautiful
This heart has felt the shadow of your grace,
Wherever loveliness has left its trace;
And songs I heard beside you, on the earth
Became the stars above us, giving birth-
Because you were beautiful

Last Week of March

School was over,
student rest from hung over
summer is approaching,
sunlight glisten on
frozen asphalt,
I shiver an squint.
It's hot to walk at ease,
benevolence of nature
beams and glimmer,
flowers are deigning,
trees are undressing,
withered leaves are falling
they fling in many places,
on the road,
on the house top,
on the window sill
here and there,
beat by beat.
yellow trees lavishly blooming
like yellow ribbons

Lost you:

Disaster strikes me
Swimming upstream
Pulled and torn
Laying about in pieces
Feeling for you
On my hands and knees
Tangled in my thoughts
Won’t resist staying stuck
Can’t stop waiting
Don’t mind being taken
Countin’ minutes, days
Minds over minds
Layers of life
Winding into you
Over and over
Until I fall
Regain the sense of myself
How I step
Stay still
Submerge the impulse to remain unhinged
