On Your Sixteenth

Having arrived at this time
Today you became sixteen
Your the Princess! , feeling Cinderella:
Because your Mother
Insisted that you - clean the mirrors,
Sweep the floors, before you went for a walk
On this beautiful Sunday
On your sixteenth birthday.

Later that same evening
We raced the Sunset west
Towards Hiram
Our archaic red Volkswagen van
Zündfolge repeating steady rhythms singing
Pushing us along.

Agnes

Yahweh is my strength and my salvation,
So do not sink to the bottom of the sea like a stone;
For Yahweh is greater than all the gods (elohim) !

In the moon Ziv,
In the moon Bul,
In the moon Abib,
In the moon Ethanim,
Interwoven with chains for my love for you;
Oh Agnes! You are like Hiram, the King of Tyre.

Agnes my love,
Come and let us share this world so sweet;
For in the peace of my mind,
I will always wait for your love.

Smart

My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more then one!
And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes-- I guess he didn't know
That three is more than two!
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!
And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!
And I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head--
Too proud of me to speak!

Lines on Corner Stone

Impromptu lines delivered at the laying of the corner store
of the church on Culloden road, with Masonic honors.

In this quiet spot, this day of June,
Which will not be forgotten soon,
For when your little church on hill
You overflowingly did fill,
You then resolved there should arise
Church worthy of your enterprise.
You've laid foundation broad and deep,
And showers of blessing may you reap.

Craft of King Hiram and St. John
Have come to lay the corner stone,
At the call of our Grand Master, *
Who, was invited by your pastor.
With Silver trowel all so fair
He laid foundation on the square.
May you be blessed with christian love,
And we all meet in Lodge above.

Invisible Man

Kunta Kinte's Gambia,
Of many Africans taken away during the Slavery days;
But today, the 44th U.S. President has his roots in Africa!

It was 1530 to the Slave Trade,
But the first Slave-Ship landed in Virginia in 1619;
And we are all part of the Dream today.

'Male and Female Slaves for sale',
A Ship from Angola landed in Jamestown in 1619;
And those were the Slavery Days gone by.

Today, the White House is ready for the First Black Family;
With Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Rock 'n' Roll, Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop and Rap.
Like the days of the invisible man,
Like the days of their hardships,
Like the days of the way forward without hope;
So take a leraning tour on this poem.

Booker.T. Wasshington,

Père Lalemant

I LIFT the Lord on high,
Under the murmuring hemlock boughs, and see
The small birds of the forest lingering by
And making melody.
These are mine acolytes and these my choir,
And this mine altar in the cool green shade,
Where the wild soft-eyed does draw nigh
Wondering, as in the byre
Of Bethlehem the oxen heard Thy cry
And saw Thee, unafraid.

My boatmen sit apart,
Wolf-eyed, wolf-sinewed, stiller than the trees.
Help me, O Lord, for very slow of heart
And hard of faith are these.
Cruel are they, yet Thy children. Foul are they,
Yet wert Thou born to save them utterly.
Then make me as I pray,
Just to their hates, kind to their sorrows, wise
After their speech, and strong before their free

The Merchantmen

King Solomon drew merchantmen,
Because of his desire
For peacocks, apes, and ivory,
From Tarshish unto Tyre:
With cedars out of Lebanon
Which Hiram rafted down,
But we be only sailormen
That use in London Town.

Coastwise -- cross-seas -- round the world and back again --
Where the flaw shall head us or the full Trade suits --
Plain-sail -- storm-sail -- lay your board and tack again --
And that's the way we'll pay Paddy Doyle for his boots!

We bring no store of ingots,
Of spice or precious stones,
But that we have we gathered
With sweat and aching bones:
In flame beneath the tropics,
In frost upon the floe,
