Amy Lowell

The Cremona Violin

Part First

Frau Concert-Meister Altgelt shut the door.
A storm was rising, heavy gusts of wind
Swirled through the trees, and scattered leaves before
Her on the clean, flagged path. The sky behind
The distant town was black, and sharp defined
Against it shone the lines of roofs and towers,
Superimposed and flat like cardboard flowers.

A pasted city on a purple ground,
Picked out with luminous paint, it seemed. The cloud
Split on an edge of lightning, and a sound
Of rivers full and rushing boomed through bowed,
Tossed, hissing branches. Thunder rumbled loud
Beyond the town fast swallowing into gloom.
Frau Altgelt closed the windows of each room.

She bustled round to shake by constant moving
The strange, weird atmosphere. She stirred the fire,

Internal Themes

I hear a tune repeating.
It does not want to rest.
It echoes inside my being
like a warbler in a nest.

The tune cannot escape me.
It has a life of its own.
It waits for me to capture it
from wherever it has grown.

I wish to set it free from me
so it will leave my head.
But I know that if I do this
I'll hear another tune instead.

The Piano-Organ

My student-lamp is lighted,
The books and papers are spread;
A sound comes floating upwards,
Chasing the thoughts from my head.

I open the garret window,
Let the music in and the moon;
See the woman grin for coppers,
While the man grinds out the tune.

Grind me a dirge or a requiem,
Or a funeral-march sad and slow,
But not, O not, that waltz tune
I heard so long ago.

I stand upright by the window,
The moonlight streams in wan:--
O God! with its changeless rise and fall
The tune twirls on and on.

I Want To Sing A Song

I want to sing a song
For long my wish on skies..
So high so far so sweet
So sweet my song so makes
And takes on notes me soar
Me soar to moon and stars
To stars and moon my notes

Happy going going
Going godly tuning
Tuning moving scaling
Scaling music tonic
Tonic songful soulful
Soulful spaceward tuneful
Harken, follow would you..

You sing you sing a song

The Wayward Wolf and Winter Owl

The wayward wolf howls to the misty moon,
His heart filled with sorrow,
That he spills into dead of night,
And echoes into silence of another cry,
Never stopping to let his weary feet rest,
Intensifying his cry.

The winter owl soars below the hollow moon,
Singing its sad tune,
Into sight as it sings and sighs,
Catching the sight of a wayward weary eye,

Together they meet and greet the rising of the dreary moon,
Filling their songs with the tune of the morrow,
Blending their hearts and souls in the tune of the morning’s morrow.

‘Till the moon doth rise again

The Diamond Ring

He gave me a diamond ring, he did.
He gave me a diamond ring.
He gave me a song to sing, he did.
He gave me a song to sing.

I wore that ring night and day
but the song just went away.
'Cause my heart knew something wasn't right
when I heard him say,

'I'm gonna need that ring for a while.
I'll get you another soon.'
He took my ring and off he went
whistlin' a tune.

I recognized that tune you see.
It was the song he gave me to sing.
And so I followed the sound of the tune
and saw what he did to my ring.

Bring Back The Time

You sit alone in your room;
your mind wanders
to the sound of a tune.
A tune that was a hit
so long ago when you were young.
You remember the first time you heard it,
and where you were at the time.
Suddenly a memory springs
from the back of your mind.
Coloured lights and dancing feet
move across your mind.
Your wish now is
bring back the time.
Bring back the days
you remember so well.
Days when there was
a new dance craze every week,
when groups played instruments
before the synthesiser was born,
when songs had lyrics

Moonbeam Romance

The airy garden’s views
The moonlight on the pews
The static in the air
The honey in your hair

The flush on your cheeks
Our love has peaked
The satin on your skin
Surrounded by our kin

If they had ever known
About the love now being shown
Would they have let it be?
Would they let you be with me?

Flowered scents in the sky
As with hope you threaten a cry
A steadily droning, familiar tune
Accent the beams from a romantic moon

When I listen to Camel’s song, “For today”

I tethered my thoughts to a mournful tune
which held them above the abyss.
It cradled and comforted, succour, so soon
I was kept from the edge of the dark precipice.

That place where the faces of phantoms collide
with the snap-shots of summers locked deep in our soul.
The dreams mix with memories, rocking the tide
so the ebb and the flow can but coax or cajole.

All the pain that was instant, instead of prolonged
may have stolen the beat from those thousands of hearts
May this tune guide them home, back where they once belonged.
When the anger subsides and the healing then starts.

Yes I tether my thoughts on a mournful tune,
with a pause for a breath at the break in the score.
May it carry my hopes in its silken cocoon
till the screams of the lost, need be heard here no more.
