On Visiting The Spot Where Captain Cook And Sir Joseph Banks First Landed In Botany Bay

Here fix the tablet. This must be the place
Where our Columbus of the South did land.
He saw the Indian village on that sand
And on this rock first met the simple race
Of Austral Indians who presumed to face
With lance and spear his musket. Close at hand
Is the clear stream from which his vent'rous band
Refreshed their ship; and thence a little space
Lies Sutherland, their shipmate; for the sound
Of Christian burial better did proclaim
Possession than the flag, in England's name.
These were the commelinae Banks first found;
But where's the tree, with the ship's wood-carved fame?
Fix, then, the Ephesian brass-'tis classic ground!

The Last Three From Trafalgar At The Anniversary Banquet, st October

IN grappled ships around The Victory,
Three boys did England's Duty with stout cheer,
While one dread truth was kept from every ear,
More dire than deafening fire that churned the sea:
For in the flag-ship's weltering cockpit, he
Who was the Battle's Heart without a peer,
He who had seen all fearful sights save Fear,
Was passing from all life save Victory.
And round the old memorial board to-day,
Three greybeards—each a warworn British Tar—
View through the mist of years that hour afar:
Who soon shall greet, 'mid memories of fierce fray,
The impassioned soul which on its radiant way
Soared through the fiery cloud of Trafalgar.

Guns Of Peace

GHOSTS of dead soldiers in the battle slain,
Ghosts of dead heroes dying nobler far,
In the long patience of inglorious war,
Of famine, cold, heat, pestilence, and pain,--
All ye whose loss makes our victorious gain--
This quiet night, as sounds the cannon's tongue,
Do ye look down the trembling stars among
Viewing our peace and war with like disdain?
Or wiser grown since reaching those new spheres,
Smile ye on those poor bones ye sowed as seed
For this our harvest, nor regret the deed?--
Yet lift one cry with us to Heavenly ears--
'Strike with Thy bolt the next red flag unfurled,
And make all wars to cease throughout the world.'

Sonnet: Revamp the Place

A prowling tiger needs deportation;
It ought to live in forests dense and wild;
Some donkey-kids must too go out-station;
The campus needs some revamping tho’ mild.

The flag of justice must be hoisted high,
On mast of truth that’s driven deep in earth;
And once again, the birds must freely fly;
A fragrance sweet again must fill the breath.

The news-mongers must be tongue-tied again;
Their craftiness won’t work for long, long days;
For, people will become unduly sane;
Some ought to change their wicked methods/ ways.
The place will soon afforest green again;
Our service will be boon to men, not bane.

Remember

Life was good and thoughts were better
Little rascals and captain kangaroo were my heroes

Now I cough and try to live again
The wild emotions of the past.

My mate was colorful toy
When I was young.

Just another love song
To be sung.

Love and life intervened with thought
Thought left me lonely and sad.

Life made me question the ways
To live in your world
With my flag unfurled.

Never forget the dream of a vet

Armistice Day (1953)

Don't jeer because we celebrate
Armistice Day,
Though thirty years of sorry fate
Have passed away.
Though still we gaurd the Sacred Flame,
And fly the Flag,
That World War Two with grief and shame
Revealed--a rag.

For France cannot defend to-day
Her native land;
And she is far to proud to pray
For helping hand.
Aye, though she stands amid the Free,
In love with life,
No more her soil will shambles be
In world-war strife.

Still we who tend the deathless Flame
Of Verdun speak;

The Doldrums

Ashen faces flood the street.
Change abounds so much so that its retreat
Is lauded & called the doldrums.
Hernan Cortez facilitated pogroms,
A sacking that gave Spain a brand new fleet
Of towering masts & enemies to meet.

Warfare now has become as well an ashen face,
Rivals to the east & an unknown west.
Unkempt maniacs with plots fooling plots
Is all they shall get-
There being no maker to meet;
No invisible virgins replete;
No sultry shores of whinnying sands.
The can look forward to no thing-
No thing but bandages on their heads & their hands.

The rest of us die for no visible cause, as well:
Food, family, shelter, flag,
Santa Claus.

Writing On The Wall

When you see the writing on life's stark wall,
do not let other's opinions hold sway.
Life wouldn't give you lights to prevent a fall -
No green, amber or red to flag your way.
Through life's busy highways we navigate.
Warnings there might be; as well as guidance.
These customs and lessons taught, we will rate
and heed, even if it our hearts should lance.
We pay the price for the choices we make.
None will step up and own up to his advice.
None will dry our tears for those we've forsake.
In ignorance we rolled the loaded dice.
Rightly or wrongly: Dare to still walk tall.
The writing is on our life's whitewashed wall!

On What Constitutes Freedom

On what constitutes freedom we do not agree
For what is freedom to you is not freedom to me
That Countries should have borders you see as okay
But I look at that in a different way
In our thinking of freedom we have got it wrong
The Country we live in to us does not belong
The borders we create we have to defend
One reason that war in the World may not end,
You boast of your love of your National flag
To you something like that does seem well worth a brag
Suppose to each their own as some are known to say
We all look at things in a different way
Your idea of freedom is different to mine
But that you have your own opinions does suit me fine.

Tribal Ways (Enemies of Match)

Every man with an opinion
Equal in valour and in strength equal
At the advent of the British
Who were carrying the flag
Of the queen with intentions
To conquer the lions and wolves
The British from India
Offered to make a few nabobs
The reply was that we are all nabobs
Can you make all nabobs
In retreat then a titular representation
In treaty like with sovereigns
With each tribe the British
Gave respect to the traditions
Commanded respect
Enemies of match
They laid arms
To each other
And the rest would follow
Between lovers of freedom
