Sin
Language is a blessing and a curse –
sometimes uniting, sometimes dividing,
sometimes an arrow, sometimes blown blossoms,
misplaced seeds..
How can we of the Western world
imagine what it’s like to speak a tongue,
as Persians, Hebrews, Aramaics, Arabs
are so blessed that they possess –
where words remember that they come from One
whose word is law, whose word is love;
so words are true at every level of understanding:
say ‘name’ or ‘kingdom’; ‘bread’; or ‘dust’:
a golden ladder from the heaven to earth,
from earth to heaven; we as dust beneath
the chariot wheel, as it drives over
this old potter’s yard; cracking discarded potsherds
back to dust, to mud, to clay, to future pots –

Tristesses de la lune (Sorrows Of The Moon)
Ce soir, la lune rêve avec plus de paresse;
Sadness of the Moon

Once I Was A Prince
Once i was a prince in your highbeamed palm-thatched house
timber and stone
of hardened mud and cold green shiny cement
in your village ribbed with drying splintering palmleaf fences
buttressed by ferns
palmyra jackfruit mango trees standing solitary sentinel in compound
corners
then just for a month
i was a prince in your eyes
i hazarded the Bay of Bengal on a lolling steamer
and watched in unbelief naked children dive for coins in the Nagapattinam offshore anchorage
just to be with you
still a teeny dreamy youth
and there you were
afraid that your village ways might irk me
make me want to go back before time
the day i arrived a double murder in the island
a day or two earlier another

Gain from the cupped hand of fate
love awakens the pain
Loss starts the hatred
Choose not to disturb, gain
From the cupped hand of fate

A yellow vessel
cupped to share the sunshine's glow
raising its petals
asking for more golden light
multi faceted balance.

Horsefly
see what horsefly sees,
thousand eyed screen
cupped satellite dish
picking pulses everywhere
at once - ears ears
black winged bat
navigating night,
separating signal
from noise

From The Biography Of An Unknown Woman: Xiii
he came
with promises aplenty
he left
with promises aplenty
she sits there
by the dark shadows
her chin cupped in her palms
for the never returning...

Pine
I felt your lips
On mine.
My hands
Cupped your face
For that drink divine.
I sipped you…
Unto eternity.
Yet to quench
That aeon of
Thirst -
From those
Lips of thine,
My heart would
Forever pine.
