What Are We?

We clear up lands of forest primeval
Only to plant new ones for survival;
Leaders scheme to modernize their nation
Others hold back, crying conservation;
Settlers would get land appropriations
While natives move into reservations;
We dig canals, but cover up ditches
In times past we treat good men like witches;

We lure tourists with thrills and suggestions
And suffer traffic jams and congestions;
Nations arrange games for friendly matches
Supporters fight each other on the benches;
Many pray to kind gods, but kill for grace
Or arm, ready for war so there is peace;

Some rare insects we have sought and cared best
While those living with us we kill as pest;
We keep rites, sutras for copulation
And then warn of overpopulation.
