My Beloved Mistress America
Wandering sleepless in the city
In the autumn rain,
I remember the scent
Of a certain girl
Wearing Parisienne perfume
And elegant nudity at midnight.
Ah, wouldn't it be lovely
To smile the world away
And disappear on a drunken beach?
Indeed, it would be marvelous to pray to Aphrodite
And sing songs with Sappho.
However, I keep walking alone
In the moral and urban decay
Of my descending days
That wind into darkness
Like dizzying spiral staircases.
But I find a certain joy
In the proud but defeated faces
Of party store bums
Sharing a neon sign redemption
Waiting for a bus stop newspaper to sleep with;
Ah, my beloved mistress America where sorrow comforts
Every neglected heart.
