A Mother's Prayer for Her Daughter

As days and months speeded by
We longed so deep to have you home
With starving eyes, we kept awake
And you came at last, to give us joy.

With warm embrace and kisses sweet
We greeted you to our lonely nest
Knowing too well, the day will come
When you will leave and leave you shall
To another haven of pain and peace
On the other end of the world, where you live.

But blest we are at this brief interlude
With you under our hovering wings
Let us spend these gala days
In peals of laughter and lively chats

Though grown you are in size and age
Still you remain our fondled babe
As we turn to years past
Faded memories come alive.

How I like to recall you
A tiny tot - with a gleaming face
Such slender figure with round buttocks
And tender toes and tapering fingers

You fiddled around in careless haste
And left the rooms in such a mess
Bits of paper and broken dolls
Strewn around in cluttered heaps
Made your mom so cross with you
On being chased with a stick in hand
You sought shelter on your daddy's lap.

You were such a sprightly kid
Blessed with copious gifts and crafts
You know how to sing and dance
Works of art bow to your skilful hands.
Now that you have come of age
You chose to tread through your own path

Let your route be safe and bright
Let your steps lead right to your goal
Let no fears annoy your heart
Let no tears dampen your cheeks
Let no misgivings cloud your sky
Let no evil ever come near you
This is a mother's prayer for you
Chanted in silence with fervent zeal!
