What Is Freedom?

When I ask myself what freedom means,
The answer's more complex than it seems;
So instead of explaining generally,
I'll try to say what it is for me…

Freedom's deciding to be happy
Though others around me may be snappy.
It's helping whoever is in need.
It's choosing charity over greed.

Freedom's walking in the rain,
Feeling each raindropp soothe my brain.
It's doing small things without a care
That other people wouldn't dare.

Freedom's unlocking the door to my past
With the strength and serenity I've found at last.
It's using courage to walk through fear.
It's loving Today while it's still here.

Freedom's being by the powerful sea
Or looking at beautiful scenery.
It's breathing fresh air, thanking God for my health.
It's thinking of nature, not about wealth.

Freedom's sleeping under the stars,
Hearing songs of the birds instead of the cars.
It's being content wherever I roam,
Whether travelling around or relaxing at home.

Freedom's being able to choose
To be satisfied, even when I lose.
It's about getting up when I fall down a drain,
Taking in a deep breath, and starting again.

When I ask myself if I am free
My heart cries out "Yes! " so gratefully.
I hope I feel free even when I am old:
My freedom's worth more to me than gold.
