Czeslaw Milosz

My Faithful Mother Tongue

Faithful mother tongue,
I have been serving you.
Every night, I used to set before you little bowls of colors
so you could have your birch, your cricket, your finch
as preserved in my memory.

This lasted many years.
You were my native land; I lacked any other.
I believed that you would also be a messenger
between me and some good people
even if they were few, twenty, ten
or not born, as yet.

Now, I confess my doubt.
There are moments when it seems to me I have squandered my life.
For you are a tongue of the debased,
of the unreasonable, hating themselves
even more than they hate other nations,
a tongue of informers,
a tongue of the confused,

Thumbnails and finger ends

A book of learned scholarship,
open in my hands, at the first page…

and then I saw, to the right of it,
my thumb nail…and marvelled –

at its perfection, at its beauty,
and at my own ignorance –

which strangely, was all part
of that same beauteous perfection…

the thumbnail: curved, as a hollowed claw,
the curve I knew would give it added strength;

sitting as secure as any child of love,
within the folded mystery of skin and flesh;

three-coloured: pale rising moon
emerging from its secret nail-bed

Snake Worship

Placing a whip
on the heads of reason
he said, 'Long live, democracy! '
With shells strewn everywhere
he proposed for 'peace zone'
and said
'Long live, peace! '
Biting the parched bellies and naked bodies
like a cobra
he said, 'Long live patience! '
and declared that he was Naag - the snake god
and for centuries
in this meek county
got the people to worship him.
In the name of democracy
peace and patience
he bit those that irked his eyes
as long as blood lasted in their bodies
and as they fell dead, devoid of blood
he threw their carcasses;

The Water Ways

The Water Ways
By Lori Triggs
Copyrighted June 14,2007

Earth was here first…
The rivers, lakes, creeks and oceans was born…
So the water was plangent in the crevices on the earth…
Than the plants with trees was rebirth…

Now came the dinosaurs that lasted millions of years…
Than came the volcanoes that wipe them out…
The reptiles came and still here on a slow decline…
So the mammals with the fish been around for centuries,
But for how long can we say…
Animals with birds been around since dooms day….
You notice they slowly diminishing…

Humans was put on earth last…
They consume in excess in
Water, plants, trees,

Researching of Your Rebirth

None of it has been rehearsed.
The researching of your rebirth.
Every detail of it has been lived.
And moments of it,
You had felt neglected and cursed.

No steps first awakened,
Came with ease.
No temptation tasted,
Lasted to please.
Few you met...
Had souls complete,
Of truth and honesty.
Although you held onto the myth...
Everyone you knew,
Was born with a goodness,
To free joy and happiness...
Within them existed

None of it has been rehearsed.

Life is a Battle Field; Fight and Fight

Hello! Hello! Oh, yellow bellied fellow -
Runs for everything yet gets nothing, a lily-livered fellow,
Life is ethereal some say yet cruel i see, oh anserine fellow
Life is a kind of sirocco, lo, chickenhearted fellow.
Topsy-turvy life, tipsy-nervy life and Jumpy-jolty life
As my life sucks for bucks - vocalized Booby, Boo! Boo!

Childhood is besotted with education - marked by fecklessness,
Youth is wasted in illusion - marked by forlornness,
Mild age is passed in the delusion - harkened by groundlessness,
Old age is lasted in dissimulation - darkened by hopelessness.
Topsy-turvy life, tipsy-nervy life and Jumpy-jolty life
As my life sucks for bucks - vocalized Booby, Boo! Boo!

Someone says life a fantasy yet be watchful,
Others say life is beautiful yet be dutiful,
Some others say life is a puzzle yet is playful,
Yet others say life is carrying donkeys load yet be cheerful.
Topsy-turvy life, tipsy-nervy life and Jumpy-jolty life
As my life sucks for bucks - vocalized Booby, Boo! Boo!

Thank You

I've tried my very best but memories are hard to evict
They feel like a monkey on my back as if I'm an addict
Daily I attempt to shake them off more often than not
But they remain right here as if my head is a parking lot
I really don't want to visit every place I have been before
But thinking of you makes me happy and so I will do it more

Although I knew that loosing you has always been a valid threat
I accepted the risk and embraced the temptation without sweat
I want to thank you that you never took for granted what I gave
That you let me take your heart and body to enslave
Our love was so destructive and overwhelming all the time
It would have never lasted without ending in a passionate crime

You opened a world for me that I never knew to exist
We challenged each other with things we checked off a list
I have never met a man so angry and yet so tender
Someone that did not mind to give me all and surrender
You are the only one I rather stayed in with than go out
The one guy I wanted to know everything about and throughout

Losses

It was not dying: everybody died.
It was not dying: we had died before
In the routine crashes-- and our fields
Called up the papers, wrote home to our folks,
And the rates rose, all because of us.
We died on the wrong page of the almanac,
Scattered on mountains fifty miles away;
Diving on haystacks, fighting with a friend,
We blazed up on the lines we never saw.
We died like aunts or pets or foreigners.
(When we left high school nothing else had died
For us to figure we had died like.)

In our new planes, with our new crews, we bombed
The ranges by the desert or the shore,
Fired at towed targets, waited for our scores--
And turned into replacements and woke up
One morning, over England, operational.

It wasn't different: but if we died

The Sun chased the Moon

The wild flowers bloom, the first snow melts,
The rain stops, the rainbow fades.
While the Sun chased the Moon...

The first fish swam, the first bird flew,
The first mammal ran, the first Man stand.
While the Sun chased the Moon...

Buildings scraped the sky, wheels rule the streets,
Man became oblivious to everything except what they need.
Still the Sun chased the Moon...

The Earth chokes, the Air appalls,
The Water tainted, the Sky weeps.
Still the Sun chased the Moon...

Love found, love lost,
In a vicious cycle of tears and joy.
Still the Sun chased the Moon...

Golden Waves (The Aftermath)

As she walked away into the night
and left me standing alone,
it seemed an eternity before I could move.
I watched her silhouette
grow smaller and smaller
until it disappeared out of sight.
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
What was I to do?
In the days that passed,
the newspapers were filled with stories
of whom the world would
eventually call the fab four.
Their music echoed out from everywhere
as their coming had begun.
A dark cloud still hung low over me.
Working in the same place,
I often caught a glimpse of her
from time to time.
There was never any explanation
for her words that night.
